In the heart of competitive tennis, the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group V in 2023 held in Isa Town, Bahrain, witnessed an exhilarating showcase of talent and determination. Thirteen nations, including Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Laos, Macau, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Qatar, Tajikistan, and Yemen, gathered to vie for supremacy in a format consisting of four round-robin groups (3×3 and 1×4) where two countries promoted onto the next tier of the qualifiers being Qatar & Mongolia.

Maldives’ Remarkable Journey & The Team

In only their second year participating in the Davis Cup, the Maldives Men’s National Team displayed commendable sportsmanship and skill. The team, comprised of Abdulla Faaih Fazeel, Aiham Shiyam, Daoud Shaheeb, Muhammad Nooh Nazih, and Mohamed Kaisaan Izzath Rasheed, under the captaincy of Aiham Shiyam and the guidance of Coach Ivo Fonseca, embraced the challenge with vigor.

Match Day 1: Maldives Vs. Mongolia (1-2 Mongolia win)

Daoud faced a consistent opponent in challenging weather conditions, ultimately losing 3-6, 3-6.

Faaih showcased resilience playing against a fast server, a tough game to break losing 2-6, 2-6 

The doubles duo of Daoud and Faaih dominated, securing a victory with a score of 7-6 6-1

Match Day 2: Maldives Vs. Bangladesh (2-1 Maldives win)

Daoud faced a formidable opponent, eventually losing 3-6, 3-6.

Faaih, determined and controlled, secured a win and a comeback at 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.

The dynamic doubles pair of Daoud and Faaih sealed another victory with a score of 6-4, 6-4.

Match Day 3: Maldives Vs. Nepal (0-3 Nepal win)

Daoud fought valiantly but was defeated 6-4, 6-0.

Faaih engaged in a challenging battle, saving 5 match points, but ultimately resulting in a 6-2, 6-7 6-2 loss.

In the doubles rubber, Aiham and Kaisan struggled, losing 6-1, 6-2

Despite the challenges, the Maldives Men’s National Team showcased exceptional skill and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
